MISSION
The CEL is located in the old church of San Vicente Mártir, a noble building located between the Deva and Quiviesa rivers. This church has hosted the Lignum Crucis on designated days since its construction. Currently, it is the Don Desiderio Gómez Señas Lebaniegos Study Center, a place of value for Liébana as a place of pilgrimage. It is also a place of sanctuary for pilgrims, unique in the region, which receives thousands of visitors each year passing through the lebaniega capital to the monastery of Santo Toribio. The facility also houses the tourist office of Potes , making this a multidisciplinary facility that seeks to pool resources for greater efficiency of cultural and touristic services.
ACTIVITIES
EXHIBITION
CEL manages the “Blessed of Liebana” exhibition, which is located in the Torre del Infantado, a few meters away, in the centre of the town of Potes. This exhibition is considered to be the best exhibition of “blessed” or codices of Beato de Liebana, in the world. It is made up of 22 facsimile codices and is complemented with four musealized plants around the figure and vision of this abbot. This exhibit facilitates a greater understanding of this historical period through objects and interactive multimedia materials.
JUBILEE YEAR
The Jubilee Year has been called an “Event of Exceptional Public Interest”. Like every Holy Year, the Government of Cantabria organizes a series of religious and cultural activities, aimed to value the historical, social, political and religious importance of the region of Liebana , with the Monastery of Santo Toribio as a central point.
