Stichting Alde Fryske Tsjerken

Stichting Alde Fryske Tsjerken is a dutch NGO, created in the 1970. Their main operation area is in the province of Friesland in the north of The Netherlands. At the moment, they have around 3.800 volunteers and 4 full-time staff working at their offices.

Old churches determine the skyline of the landscape of Friesland, and are riches well worth preserving. An increasing number of church buildings are losing their original purpose.

Stichting Alde Fryske Tsjerken (The Old Frisian Churches Foundation) wants to prevent them from disappearing. It achieves this goal by taking over ownership of monumental churches in special cases. We encourage our local committees to organize all kind of events in our churches.

In the next five years a larger number of churches will lose their purpose. Their goal is to take over ownership where this is financially possible. Not all churches can be taken over; that’s for sure. The foundation focusses on national listed buildings, because of the available subsidies. In the next five years they expect to take over more graveyards. Currently they own 6 graveyards. More parishes are asking them to take over their graveyards.

The 51 beautiful churches owned by the Old Frisian Churches Foundation can be visited all year round. If the door is locked, the key can be picked up from a keyholder.
