SKIVRE project meeting in Leuven, Belgium – 23-24 September

The third SKIVRE project meeting was held on the 23rd and 24th of September in Leuven, Belgium with the participation of the SKIVRE project partners. The meeting was held at the Park Abbey in Leuven, hosted by FRH member PARCUM, an organisation offering thematic exhibitions and workshops for religion, art, and culture.

The meeting began on the morning of the 23rd of September, with a session focused on the development and update of the training scheme modules.

After lunch partners had the opportunity to conduct a study visit in the Park Abbey, a Premonstratensian abbey in Leuven, Belgium, founded in 1129. The visit focused on the restoration work being carried out, and the various planned intiaitives including an ecological farm, a cow stable, the production of ecological milk and cheese, and a microbrewery producting Park Abbey beer. The whole complex has become a hub and meeting place for the citizens of Leuven, with close partnerships with the KU Leuven and local cooperatives.

The second day, started with a visit to Abbey of Averbode. The abbey was founded in 1134 on the initiative Arnold II Count of Loon. At that time, their main activity was agriculture, to ensure its sustainability. The monks at Averbode belong to the order founded by Saint Norbert; the Norbertines. On the guided tour partners had the opportunity to learn more about their production activities, including beer, cheese, and bread. They also have an editing house, where they produce educational books and magazines. SKIVRE partners had the opportunity to learn more about the innovative management model and community engagement carried out by the Abbey.

After the visit the partners held a meeting on the digital training platform.

Overall, this third SKIVRE meeting gave the partners a new perspective on how Monasteries in Belgium manage and innovate their monastic production.

We would like to thank our partners and especially FRH member PARCUM for hosting us at the wonderful Park Abbey.
