FRH Runs for Heritage

Run for Heritage is an initiative that encourages young people to be active while learning about their religious heritage. It will take place in 7 events in Cantabria, Spain from 18 October31 December 2021. These events will feature students from various schools across Spain who will be running in races among their local religious heritage sites.


Run for Heritage is an initiative to showcase the legacy of the European Year of Cultural Heritage. Its main objective is to raise awareness of the importance of religious heritage among the younger generation, showing the wonderful treasures we have around us that often go overlooked. This is done through fun outdoor activities that promote healthy habits while allowing young people to learn about the history and cultural richness of their town or city.


The 7 events will involve over 1300 students from local schools in the region of Cantabria, Spain. The events are as follows:


This event involved a bike ride from the Centro Estudios Lebaniegos to the Monastery of Santo Toribio de Liébana. It included students from the Concepción Arenal School in Potes, Spain.

Participants of the event will include :

  • Vice President and Minister of Universities, Equality, Culture and Sport of Cantabria, Pablo Zuloaga Martínez
  • 5th and 6th grade students of the Colegio Concepción Arenal de Potes.
  • 8 teachers
  • Family volunteers
  • Civil Guard of Potes


This event will be an all-inclusive event involving social inclusion groups from two rural areas of Cantabria, Spain. These groups will race from the Centro Estudios Lebaniegos to the Monastery of Santo Toribio in the town of Potes. The participating groups are:

  • Viviendo from the Picos de Europa Region
  • Cultivando Inclusión from the Nansa Valley region
  • The group Arrastrasillas will also be joining

FRH is proud to be hosting this all-inclusive event which includes participants with disabilities. Our shared religious heritage belongs to all of us and deserves to be appreciated by everyone.


The event will take place in the Hermitage of St. Catherine, the Monastery of St. Toribio, and the Hermitage of San Miguel. In each of the three locations, there will be activities related to the environment and its heritage such as:

  • History lessons of the enclaves
  • Scavenger hunts
  • Flora identification
  • Landscape recognition
  • Aspects and curious things

Participants: 20 students of the CRA of Liébana and Peñarrubia
