The FRH Torch of Heritage and Culture, one of our flagship initiatives within the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018, was present at the first ever European Cultural Heritage Summit, held in Berlin from 18-24 June 2018.
The Summit focused on the theme ‘Sharing Heritage – Sharing Values’ and was the key public event of the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018, supported by the EU’s Creative Europe programme. It mobilised public and private stakeholders for an ambitious European Cultural Heritage Agenda and was attended by the highest representatives of EU Institutions, Member States and civil society organisations from all over Europe. The Summit was co-hosted by Europa Nostra, the Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz (Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, SPK) and the German Cultural Heritage Committee (DNK), acting as national coordinator of the EYCH in Germany.
FRH was proud to present its FRH Torch of Heritage and Culture during the Creative Session on the 22nd June. We are also delighted to have collected 25 new contributions in the form of video interviews and letters.
We are honoured that Maestro Plácido Domingo, renowned artist and President of Europa Nostra, joined our initiative and contributed to the FRH Torch with his own personal memory.
FRH participated in various sessions and events throughout the summit, including:
- ‘ROCK session – Cultural Heritage connects!’, reflected on ways forward for an innovative, collaborative and systemic approach to promoting the effective regeneration and adaptive reuse of historic city centres.
- ‘Creative Session – Communicating Heritage in the 21st Century’, which brought together eminent communicators about Europe’s tangible and intangible heritage and gave them the opportunity to share their inspiring experiences with the audience.
- ‘Open Heritage Evening’, a festive reception on Berlin’s Museum Island, one of the three UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Berlin.
- ‘European Policy Debate – Sharing Heritage – Sharing Values’, the main summit event, with the participation of high-level decision and policy makers and cultural heritage stakeholders, who discussed the best ways to use cultural heritage as a strategic resource with multiple benefits for the future of Europe. The European Policy Debate included the presentation of the “Berlin Call” to action.
- ‘European Heritage Awards Ceremony 2018’, which handed out prizes to the 29 laureates of the EU Prize for Cultural Heritage / Europa Nostra Awards, the 7 grand prix, and the Public Choice Award winner, the rehabilitation project of the Botanical Garden of the National Palace of Queluz, Sintra, Portugal. The ceremony was honoured with the presence of Europa Nostra President Plácido Domingo, European Commissioner Tibor Navracsics and Federal President of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
