Commission to preserve national monuments of Bosnia and Herzegovina

The commission to preserve National Monuments of Bosnia and Herzegovina, is a local   institution which declares and registers the country’s national monuments,  sites, and other places as immovable or movable heritage of historical and cultural importance to Bosnia and Herzegovina.  Members of the commission are chosen based on their ethnicity, rather than their political affiliation.  This is done in order to ensure the equal representation of the ethnic groups of Bosnia and Herzegovina (Serbs, Croats, Bosniaks).

The main goal of the commission has been to incorporate cultural heritage into the process of reconciliation and rebuilding civil trust, the Commission has been crucially import in buildings sustainable peace in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The commission carries out different activities, such as, training, education and public engagement.  The commission was awarded the European Heritage award in 2010 for their activities in campaigning for the preservation of cultural sites in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

ACTIVITIES

SUMMER SCHOOL PROGRAM

The commission operates a summer school focused on learning about conservation and vernacular culture.  In this summer school, students will learn both innovative and traditional conservation techniques.  This mainly focuses on traditional methods of working with stonework and focuses on local UNESCO sites.

COLLABORATIONS

The commission frequently collaborates with other organizations in order to preserve cultural sites.  This can range from small local organizations, to larger organizations like UNESCO.

DATABASE

The commission operates a database of national historic sites.  This database maps out the locations of all of these sites.  In addition to this, they have a virtual exhibition, that can be found on their website of national sites throughout the country.
