The Art Nouveau synagogue in Subotica (Szabadka) Serbia, considered to be one of the finest examples of Art Nouveau religious architecture in Central Europe, has been placed on Europa Nostra’s 2014 list of Europe’s Seven Most Endangered Monuments and Sites. The synagogue has been undergoing fitful restorations since the 1970’s.
After World War II, the large building could no longer be sustained by the remaining Jewish community. It has been used by the Subotica National Theatre for a number of years, but is now empty and its condition has steadily deteriorated.
