SWEDEN – 3500 churches: problem or opportunity?

The Swedish Church has some 3500 buildings in its care. About a third are medieval, and another third are from the 1950’s-1960’s. Sweden is unique in that only one church has been torn down in the past 100 years. But this heritage faces huge challenges, to which the Stockholm Royal Institute of Art testified by launching the course ‘3500 churches: problem or opportunity?’

Students and guest speakers will present their work in a seminar, and an exhibition has now opened the Gun Gallery Art , Skeppsholmen. Read the student’s report, with case studies of 8 churches in Swedish but summarized in English, here.
