International Conference Lund

The Diocese of Lund, Church of Sweden is looking forward to welcoming you at their international conference focused on use and development of church buildings and ecclesiastical heritage. The conference, entitled Preserve, Use and Develop – Ecclesiastical Heritage and its Future Challenges, will present projects and methods which aim at finding extended use for churches as sustainable resources for local communities and parishes. Several keynote speeches will give theological, societal and heritage perspective on church buildings and cultural history in a European context.

During the conference, which features presentations of various case studies from Sweden and beyond, our new method for making use of ecclesiastical cultural heritage is launched. Speeches are given by, among others, Peter Aiers, Chief Executive CCT, Revd Canon Dr Stephen Evans, Church of England and Professor Luc Noppen, Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM).

A conference dinner and opening of an innovative art experience will take place at the Odarslöv Church, until not long ago a closed and decaying church in the countryside, today newly renovated and situated next to the development site for The European Spallation Source (ESS), one of the world’s largest science and technology infrastructure projects. The conference will discuss if this might be one of many possible future scenarios for some of our historic churches.

Conference partners include Churches Conservation Trust (CCT), Future for Religious Heritage (FRH) and International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS). The conference is a part of the European Commission programme for the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018.
