Portugal: urban metamorphosis and adaptive use of former religious houses

Professor Thomas Coomans, FRH Council member, is in the scientific committee of the international Conference “From sacred city to secular town: urban dynamics and new memories” that took place in Lisbon from 4 to 6 November 2015.

The panel included some of the most respected experts in the sector in  Europe and internationally.

This Conference is an initiative of the research project “From sacred city to secular town: the extinction of religious orders and the dynamics of urban transformation in the 19th century Lisbon”. This project has started in May 2013 and finished in November 2015.

The event not only intended to compare the diversity of scenarios of urban metamorphosis and adaptive use of former religious houses, but proposed a platform for sharing information and methodological issues in a multidisciplinary perspective (architectural history, urban history, archaeology, heritage conservation, urban planning).
