Online face-to-face members’ meeting from Belgium

Religious heritage in the face of natural disasters

FRH invites its members and anyone interested to a new online face-to-face meeting to analyse the challenges facing churches and their contents in the Wallonia region of Belgium. The increasing vulnerability of religious heritage among different European regions was brought to the fore by a specific event: the floods of July 2021. This unprecedented catastrophe for the south of Belgium and in particular for the Walloon region where thirty historic churches were directly impacted, gave rise to an emergency situation that required immediate attention. As a consequence, the CIPAR (Interdiocesan Center for Heritage and Religious Arts) responded by underlining the need to develop a methodology and deploy resources to better assist church managers and preserve as many heritage assets as possible.

During this online session, Maura Moriaux, Head of parish church inventories and expert in the development of methodologies for evaluating religious heritage at risk at CIPAR, will share the recommendations and action plans developed so far to help authorities and relevant stakeholders to be prepared to respond to future natural disasters rapidly and effectively.

The event will take place on 26 September 2024 from 10:00 to 11:00 CEST.

About CIPAR

Created in 2017, the CIPAR (Interdiocesan Center for Heritage and Religious Arts) is a non-profit organization established by the four French-speaking dioceses of Wallonia (Tournai, Namur, Liège, and the Archdiocese of Malines-Brussels) with the goal of coordinating efforts in the conservation, protection, and promotion of parish churches. The CIPAR also serves as the representative body for diocesan heritage services, which are the frontline field contacts.
