NORWAY – Church conservation needs municipality funding

Several churches in Ringsaker are in need of repair and maintenance and need 60 million NOK (ca €7.4m) to reach a good enough standard. Now they have only two million.

Old roof tiles are stacked along the wall at Ringsaker Church. It is one of two medieval churches in the community. Efforts to put a new roof on the church aisles are finally underway.

– This should have been done a very long time ago, said churchwarden Knut Are Hole.

From 2015 the church is dependent on the municipality to allocate money so they can finish the works. The Church Warden in Hedmark’s largest municipality has more than one church to worry about.

– In five of the churches as it is the worst of it is talking about a backlog of 60 million for the normal maintenance standards, he said.

– Det her skulle vært gjort for veldig mange år siden, sier kirkeverge, Knut Are Hole.
