FRH TALKS | Religious Heritage at Risk: Saving our Cultural Treasures I (Church of Santo Estevo de Pousada)

Join us on 21 February 2025!

The Church of Santo Estevo de Pousada is a historic chapel in Northern Spain, dating from the 12th and 13th centuries. For centuries, this chapel served as the parish church of Pousada and was near the Via Künig, a variant of the Camino Francés de Santiago established by German monk Hermann Künig in the 15th century. The church was the first one in this area along the Via Romana XIX featuring sets of wall paintings, which is a clear indication of its importance in medieval times. Its interior still retains some remnants of these 15th-century frescoes. Unfortunately, this Galician heritage enclave is at risk of being lost due to the deteriorating condition of the building and its location in a sparsely populated area.

Our guests speakers from the Department of Cultural Heritage of the Diocese of Lugo, Jesús Salvador López and Uxía Aguiar Ballesteros, will share with us the diocese’s ambitious plan to restore and revitalise the Church of Santo Estevo de Pousada. Their presentation will cover the immediate challenges faced by the building, including urgent roof repairs, and will outline strategies for preserving the precious frescoes in its interior.

This will be the first webinar of a series of  FRH Talks dedicated to ambitious initiatives and resilient solutions to save endangered religious heritage sites. The three heritage sites presented in these webinars are all shortlisted in the 7 Most Endangered Programme 2025.

Join us on Friday 21 February and contribute to the conversation about the safeguarding of our endangered religious heritage treasures.
