We are pleased to announce that Future for Religious Heritage (FRH) and the European Heritage Label Bureau (EHL Bureau) have recently partnered to offer tailored training to managers of religious heritage sites who have been awarded this prestigious European label, in recognition of the key role that these monuments and sites have played in Europe’s integration and current values.
The training course “Skills for the valorisation of religious heritage” will take place from 12 September to 10 October 2025, with a series of four modules presented by five experts in the fields of religious tourism, management of historic sites, and cultural heritage advocacy. This training course will be an opportunity for managers of sites and decision makers to broaden their knowledge about the specific needs and characteristics of religious sites within the tourism sector, and design strategies to connect with audiences, optimise the use of resources and expand their networks.
The sessions will be conducted by Silvia Aulet, Researcher in Spiritual and Religious Tourism at the University of Girona (Spain); Kevin Griffin, Senior Lecturer in Tourism in the School of Hospitality Management and Tourism at TU Dublin (Ireland); Patty Wageman, Director of the Groningen Historic Churches Foundation (the Netherlands); Lilian Grootswagers, FRH Advisory Board President and Owner of Erfgoed.nu (the Netherlands); and Pilar G. Bahamonde, Director of Fundación Camino Lebaniego (Spain).
Since 2013, more than 60 cultural heritage monuments and sites have been recognised with the European Heritage Label for their role in promoting or contributing to European ideals, values, history and integration. Twelve of this sites are historic places of worship, a very specific sector that often faces unique challenges in developing its full potential as a tourist destination.
