France: Restoring St. Saturnin Church in Chauconin, near Paris

Rempart, a union of 170 non-profit associations run mainly by volunteers, is organizing from 4 to 18 July 2015 a work camp near Paris. The work camp is part of a huge restoration project being undertaken to preserve the church of Saint Saturnin in Chauconin.

This impressive monument is located 50 km from Paris and dates back to the Renaissance period. Participants will be involved in helping to restore the North Chapel indoor coatings, using traditional masonry techniques. No prior knowledge is needed – only the motivation to learn some restoration techniques.

During this stay, there will be around 10 French and international volunteers, supervised by two group leaders: one technical leader for the work camps and one team leader for collective life. With their help, participants will take turns to organize the preparation of meals and supplies. You will sleep in the collective dormitory; the premises are located around the work camp. Typically there will be 6 hours work per day, with a one-day break scheduled every three work days or so.

Group leaders and volunteers will organize activities for the days off. A trip to Paris can be scheduled, as well as outings to discover the region and several activities depending on the weather and according to participants’ wishes.

A stay in our work camp is a new work experience, an experience of heritage discovery but first and foremost an experience of collective life. This will be the opportunity to discover the history of the Parisian region and other camps nearby.

The cost of the work camp is 160 euro.
