UK Coventry cathedral Medieval glass goes on show

A restoration project to conserve Coventry Cathedral’s collection of Medieval stained glass is being opened to the public later.

The work is part of a project to preserve the ruins of the city’s old cathedral.

The World Monuments Fund (WMF) has been raising funds for the project after the cathedral was named on its list of buildings needing preservation.

The glass will be available to view at the Herbert Gallery.

Dating back to the 15th Century, the ongoing analysis and restoration work is being completed by historic buildings specialists Crick Smith and is expected to cost about £225,000.

More than £300,000 has already been raised for the wider cathedral conservation through the WMF appeal.

The WMF said the “rare” collection was thought to be the work of the city’s renowned Medieval glass artist John Thornton.

The stained glass panels were removed from the cathedral before World War II and had been stored in the crypt ever since
