MISSION

The municipality of Orihuela, in southeastern Spain, is dedicated to ensuring the conservation of its many cultural heritage sites either by direct ownership or through their ensuring their care as a local administration body. Their overall goal is to ensure that this heritage is not only known but also recognized for its value.

Currently, work is being done on numerous projects on an international level to preserve the municipality’s cultural heritage sites. Methods of preserving these sites include extended use, reuse, and conservation.

ACTIVITIES

ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM EXPANSION

One of the organisations biggest and most important projects happening currently is the expansion of the city’s archaeological museum. This project has two objectives – to establish a rehabilitation-conservation process that hinders the deterioration of the building and to provide the building with the necessary conditions that allow the development of the needs of the program in a safe, functional and accessible way for users, adapting to regulatory compliance.

CONSERVATION AND RESTORATION OF THE CASTLE AND WALLS OF ORIHUELA

The Municipality is undergoing an extensive project to preserve the defensive Andalusian fortifications of the area. Four major interrelated objectives have been set, in accordance with the guidelines of the National Plan for Defensive Architecture (PNAD), these are to Compile all the information necessary for the knowledge of this site and the entire scope of action of the Master Plan. Make a diagnosis of the current situation. Make proposals for action for documentation, research, protection, conservation, restoration, dissemination, enhancement and management of the property and its environment, including analysis of economic viability. Disseminate the castle and its Master Plan among citizens, as well as enable the mechanisms for their participation.
