Sanctuary is an open repository of religious heritage sites in Europe. This user-friendly tool offers free access in a single repository to all relevant information from national, regional and private religious heritage databases to researchers, policy makers and civil society as a whole, on the same map interface and to the same data standard, overcoming the current limitations of fragmented data in numerous pages.
The platform is owned by Future for Religious Heritage (FRH) and has been developed in cooperation with Religioscape.
Datasets
The platform was officially presented at the FRH Conference “Religious Heritage in Transition: Challenges and Solutions”, held on 23-24 September 2024 in Krakow, Poland.
The current repository includes the following databases:
- Listed churches of the Church of England in England (provided by Historic England)
- Religious heritage of Larnaca province in Cyprus (provided by the EU-sponsored Religious Track of the Peace Process of the University of Münster)
- Historic Synagogues of Europe (provided by the Foundation for Jewish Heritage)
- Jewish Cemeteries (provided by ESJF – European Jewish Cemeteries Initiative)
- Romanian burial grounds (provided by the Făgăraș project)
Collaborations
The digital infrastructure developed by Sanctuary offers faith and community groups an accessible solution to record their assets, given its inbuilt ready made structure and functionality, and the advantages that it also brings in terms of cross-border and cross-organisation working.
