We are pleased to announce that the Jewish heritage sites of Worms, Speyer, and Mainz, Germany have been listed as UNESCO world heritage sites. FRH Member, Dr Susanne Urban who is the Executive Manager of the SchUM Staedte Association which manages these sites writes about the history behind them in our featured article.

For our 10th year anniversary, we've interviewed Priest Ludo Collin, Canon of Ghent's St. Bavo's Cathedral and president of PARCUM, formerly CRKC, to discuss his views on the importance of religious heritage and FRH's mission to safeguard it.

CONSTANTLY REBUILT - THE WORMS SYNAGOGUE, A PLACE OF BELIEF, TRAUMA, AND RESILIENCE
The medieval synagogue of Worms, along with Jewish heritage sites in neighbouring Speyer and Mainz, has recently been listed as a UNESCO world heritage site. In medieval times, the Jewish communities in these cities formed an alliance that essentially laid the framework for later Ashkenazi Jewish communities throughout Europe. The Worms synagogue is one of the best-preserved among these sites and is the oldest synagogue in Germany. 10TH YEAR ANNIVERSARY INTERVIEW
FRH 10TH YEAR ANNIVERSARY: AN INTERVIEW WITH CANON LUDO COLLIN OF ST BAVO'S CATHEDRAL OF GHENT
In honour of FRH's 10th year anniversary, we've interviewed Priest Ludo Collin, Canon of St Bavo's Cathedral in Ghent, Belgium, and president of PARCUM, formerly CRKC. As the driving force behind the maintenance and renovation of the 15th-century altarpiece by the Van Eyck brothers and through his involvement in several other religious heritage organisations, he is an individual well versed in the world of religious heritage and can provide a wealth of knowledge and experience on the sector. Canon Collin shares with us his perspective on why religious heritage is important in our lives and the best ways for how this heritage can be protected. READ MORE>>>

REGISTER FOR THE FRH BIENNIAL CONFERENCE EVENT "CONTINUITY IN COMMUNITY CONNECTION AND DIALOGUE" 
Register now for the second event of the FRH Biennial Conference Europe's Living Religious Heritage. The event titled "Continuity in Community Connection and Dialogue" will be a hybrid event that will take place in Bologna, Italy and be live-streamed online, making it available to everyone. LA SAUVEGARDE DE L'ART FRANÇAIS' INITIATIVE TO INVOLVE YOUTH IN HERITAGE PRESERVATION  
La Sauvegarde de l'Art Français has launched an initiative to involve youth in religious heritage preservation. The students of the Lycée d'Acheuléen have participated in a four-month project to restore the statuette of Sainte-Catherine of the church of Cadonette in Amiens. NOMINATIONS NOW OPEN FOR EUROPA NOSTRA'S 7 MOST ENDANGERED PROGRAMME 
FRH strongly recommends its members to consider nominating a site to Europa Nostra's 7 Most Endangered Programme. The call for nominations for 2022 is now open until 17 September. The aim of this programme is to raise awareness of the challenges facing cultural heritage, giving the winning sites access to expert aid to ensure their preservation. In last year's programme, FRH nominated three sites, two of which were chosen as winners. These sites, the Visoki Dečani Monastery and the San Juan de Socueva Chapel (pictured above) are now greatly benefitting from these titles. JEWISH HERITAGE OF WORMS, SPEYER, AND MAINZ LISTED AS UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITES
On 27 July, UNESCO unveiled their decision to include the Jewish heritage of Worms, Speyer, and Mainz, Germany to their list of world heritage sites. The unique Jewish heritage of these cities is managed by FRH member, the SchUM Staedte and FRH would like to congratulate them on this achievement. These three cities contain some of Germany's oldest Jewish heritage sites that later provided a framework for other Jewish communities. The listing of these sites as UNESCO world heritage sites will help to ensure their preservation and protection for future generations. READ MORE>>>

The Schoolkerk is an innovative project of FRH member, Stichting Oude Groninger Kerken Foundation and is the focal point of its educational activities. Currently, this project is a contestant for the Europa Nostra Public Choice Awards for the winning cultural heritage projects from their Europa Nostra/ European Heritage Awards 2021. THE SLOVENIAN PRESIDENCY TO THE EU UNVEILS ITS PLANS FOR CULTURE 

The Slovenian Presidency of the European Council took effect on 1 July and the cabinet has announced their policy priorities to the CULT committee of the European Parliament. Among their priorities, they have declared cultural rights and heritage as a central point to develop sustainable solutions for development. The current presidency will hold office until 31 December of this year. More information on their policy priorities related to culture can be found on the EU Parliament's website. READ MORE >>>

EU PILOT PROJECT ON REVIVING EUROPE'S JEWISH CEMETERIES COMPLETES ITS SECOND PHASE 
The European Jewish Cemeteries Initiative (ESJF) has completed its second phase in an event that can be viewed on Youtube here. The project is Carried out by a consortium of European partners including FRH Member, the Foundation for Jewish Heritage. The event presented the deliverables of the project as well as valuable inputs from European Commission Vice President Margaritis Schinas, Katharina von Schnurbein. the European Commission Coordinator for Combatting Antisemitism, and Raya Kalenova, Executive Vice President of the European Jewish Congress. READ MORE >>>

FRH MEMBER OF THE MONTH: AYUNTAMIENTO DE ORIHUELA – CONCEJALIA DE PATRIMONIO HISTORICO
Our featured member of the month is one of our newest members, Ayuntamiento de Orihuela – Concejalía de Patrimonio Histórico. The municipality of Orihuela, in southeastern Spain, is dedicated to ensuring the conservation of its many cultural heritage sites either by direct ownership or through ensuring their care as a local administration body. STAINED GLASS AT THE CANTERBURY CATHEDRAL FOUND TO BE AMONG THE WORLD'S OLDEST

A new non-destructive dating technique on the "Ancestors of Christ" stained glass windows of the Canterbury cathedral have revealed them to be from the 12th-century, making them among the oldest in the world. Originally, the stained glass was thought to be from the 13th century, however, this re-dating has officially revealed them to be much older. The head of the research team has called this find something "hugely significant" as it was previously only thought that only a few stones were left of the cathedral from this period. READ MORE >>>

SEARCHING FOR EUROPE'S ISLAMIC HERITAGE IN ALBANIA

Albania, our country of the month has a rich religious heritage, consisting of several important sites in both Christianity and Islam. It is home to many of Europe's historic mosques and Islamic centres of learning. Tharik Hussain, author of, Minarets in the Mountains, journeys to Albania in search of Europe's Islamic heritage in this excerpt from his book published by the Guardian. He describes his travel to the town of Gjirokastër, a historic town that s home to 15 Islamic heritage sites and where the 17th-century Ottoman writer Evliya spent some time. READ MORE >>>
