Welcome to the April issue of the newsletter!

The FRH biennial conference "Europe's Living Religious Heritage" will take place in 4 hybrid events across Europe that will be broadcast online and will focus on the 4 conference sub-themes. The first event will take place on 28 May in Barcelona, Spain - you can pre-register here.

FRH is proud to announce that 2 religious heritage sites it nominated for the "7 Most Endangered Programme" were chosen as finalists, placing the threats faced by religious heritage in the spotlight all over Europe. More information, as well as a video speech by FRH President Pilar G. Bahamonde, can be found in our press release.

In honour of our 10th year anniversary, FRH would like to recognise the hard work and dedication of its first president and founding member, Olivier de Rohan-Chabot -his leadership paved the way for FRH to be where it is today.

This month's 'Country of the Month' is Ukraine, a diverse eastern country with a rich history of Jewish Heritage. In order to highlight this, we've compiled some of the top Jewish sites in the country in our Religiana list "The Jewish Heritage of Ukraine".  Much of Ukraine's Jewish heritage sites are facing challenges in their maintenance. This is highlighted in our featured article which takes a look at the restoration project of the Tempel Synagogue of Ivano-Frankivsk in western Ukraine.

In EU news, 15 member states have pre-selected their sites to be awarded the European Heritage Label, an award designating the site as significant to the shared history and culture of Europe.

Finally, FRH has written a review of the book "When the Cemetery Becomes Political" by FRH Member, Thorsten Kruse, Hubert Faustmann, and Sabine Rogge which examines the difficult political situations that heritage professionals may find themselves in when dealing with religious heritage.

As always, we are happy to feature members in our newsletter, so feel free to submit articles, event notifications, or anything else you would like to share with the network.

Jordi Mallarach Parés
FRH Executive Officer

THE TEMPEL SYNAGOGUE OF IVANO-FRANKIVSK, UKRAINE: IN NEED OF RESTORATION AFTER THE RETURN OF ITS JEWISH COMMUNITY
Ukraine, our current country of the month, has a long and rich Jewish heritage with a large number of unique sites. One such site is the Tempel Synagogue in the town of Ivano-Frankivsk, in western Ukraine, which was surveyed as part of a large-scale project by FRH Member, the Foundation for Jewish Heritage to map and catalogue Europe’s Historic Synagogues in partnership with the Center for Jewish Art at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. This site was returned to the Jewish community 30 years ago this year, after sustaining damage during the second world war and facing decades of neglect under Soviet occupation. Maintenance of the site has proven quite difficult since it was originally built to accommodate a much larger community than currently exists. Darcy Stammler, a member of FRH, explains the recently launched restoration project in place for the synagogue in this month's featured article. READ MORE >>>
