Welcome to the September issue of the newsletter!

This month's feature article is by Sally Berkovic, who sets out 10 commandments for the preservation of Europe's Jewish heritage. 

If you have not done so already, there is still time to respond to our heritage craft skills survey.  

We will be hosting a webinar on the challenges and opportunities for the cultural heritage sector in the wake of the COVID crisis.  

Furthermore, we will be hosting four working groups in preparation for our biennial conference "Europe's Living Religious Heritage." 

For FRH members, we would like to announce that our Annual General Meeting will take place on October 22nd at 13:00 CET, more information be sent via Email.

In EU news, the European Commission has released the Creative Europe monitoring report for 2019, which describes the programme's full deployment and highlights its achievements.
 
Also, the Council of Europe and the European Union will be hosting the European Heritage Days, a virtual celebration of Europe's heritage.

Finally, this month's Religiana list takes a look at the monasteries of Moldova on the anniversary of its independence in 1991.

"10 (OTHER) COMMANDMENTS" - FOR THE CARE OF JEWISH HERITAGE
In a thoughtful and provocative essay, Sally Berkovic, the CEO of the Rothschild Foundation Hanadiv Europe, proposes 10 Commandments for the care of Jewish heritage. Her hope is to spark and intensify debate, discussion, and further elaboration of the subject in the tradition of Jewish scholarship and learning. Jewish Heritage Europe is a project of the Rothschild Foundation. The essay was originally published as a post on Sally’s blog on the Times of Israel web site, ahead of Shavuot 2020 — the holiday that marks the reception of the 10 Commandments by Moses on Mt. WEBINAR: "THE CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES OF COVID-19 ON CULTURAL HERITAGE"
In order to gain a diverse perspective on how the cultural heritage sector has coped with the COVID-19 crisis, FRH will be hosting a webinar. The webinar will take place at 10:00 (CET) via zoom on Thursday, the 22nd of October. It will feature high-level speakers including Catherine Magnant, the Head of Unit for Cultural Policy at the European Commission, and Hae Un Rii, President of the ICOMOS international scientific committee, PRERICO. PRECONFERENCE WORKING GROUPS 
Leading up to the Barcelona conference, there will be four working groups established based on the sub-themes of the conference's main theme "living religious heritage." These groups will meet on a regular basis leading up to the conference, wherein they will present their findings. This first session will take place at 15:00 on October 22nd and will last roughly an hour and a half. HERITAGE SKILLS SURVEY 
We are continuing to gather responses for our heritage craft skills survey. This survey seeks to understand the heritage and crafts skills sector post-COVID-19. We are gathering information so that we can learn more about what is important for the religious heritage sector and where there are problems to be highlighted. We are looking for individuals involved in heritage crafts to participate in our survey. If you are not involved in heritage crafts but you know someone who is, we would be grateful if you could pass it along to the correct person in your organisation or elsewhere. EUROPEAN HERITAGE DAYS - A VIRTUAL CELEBRATION OF EUROPE'S HERITAGE

Thousands of cultural sites are preparing to open their virtual doors for the first time ever as the Council of Europe and the European Union once more join forces to celebrate the annual Heritage Days. Held since 1985, the Days give visitors a chance to see inside places of historical and cultural interest not normally open to the public. MONASTERIES OF MOLDOVA
August 27th marked the independence day of the Republic of Moldova from the Soviet Union in 1991. In honour of this day, we put together a Religiana list of some of the top monasteries that can be found in Moldova. A majority Eastern Orthodox Christian country, Moldova has several historic and architecturally significant monasteries on its territory, making them one of its biggest tourist attractions. FRH MEMBER OF THE MONTH: STICHTING ALDE FRYSE TSJERKEN
This month's member of the week is Stichting Alde Fryske Tsjerken. Alde Fryske Tsjerken is a Dutch NGO, created in the 1970s. Their main operation area is in the province of Friesland in the north of The Netherlands. At the moment, they have around 3,800 volunteers and 4 full-time staff working at their offices. The goal of Alde Fryske Tsjerken (The Old Frisian Churches Foundation) is to prevent churches from disappearing across the Frisian landscape. It achieves this goal by taking over ownership of monumental churches. They also encourage our local committees to organize all kind of events in their churches. READ MORE >>>
 
EXHIBITION ANNOUNCEMENT - ARCHITECTURAL & HERITAGE SCANNING'S PROJECT ON THE PETERBOROUGH CATHEDRAL
Architectural & Heritage Scanning, a UK based organisation has almost completed the most in-depth 3D digital survey of any English Cathedral/Building to date. Using a range of traditional survey methods, Lidar, Photogrammetry and close-range handheld scanning, the data collected contains over 16.8 billion points, over 35,000 24mp images and high-resolution close range scans amounting to nearly 2Tb of data. A free invitation exhibition of this project will be held on the 23rd of October.
