The Netherlands: bikes and churches

Everybody knows that there are more bicycles than residents in The Netherlands. Even before they can walk, Dutch children are immersed in a world of cycling.

On 27 March 2016 the Dutch city of Deventer hosted The Vedett Round, a cycling event organized by the “Course & Culture” Foundation.

The route included a ride in the Mountain Church. In 1967 this church was disestablished and its property transferred to the Municipality of Deventer. Today the building is used as an exhibition center and concert hall.

The unique combination of a cycle race and a church not only delighted the riders, it also brought new audiences to this former site of worship and created a visual spectacle not seen before.
