SPAIN – Government spends 200.000 on church repairs

The government of La Rioja subsidizes between 65 and 90% of the cost of rehabilitating eleven churches and chapels in small municipalities. According to the Order of chapels, churches, altarpieces and other unique elements, signed on July 7th, the regional government allocated 200.000 euros (on a budgetted total of 276.909). The rest of the cost will be born by the individual municipalities. Only “very small municipalities without adequate resources” are eligible to receive funding, said the Minister of Culture, Gonzalo Chaplain.

Other criteria determining the amount of funding include the urgency of restoration; the cultural, historical and artistic interest of the heritage concerned; its conservation status; and the technical quality of the restoration project. Repairs to roofs and facades are prioritized.
